For a group of young pupils in Accra, the weekend was about more than watching golf. It was their chance to pick up a club, step onto the course and experience the sport for themselves.
Pupils from four Futurestars Charity partner schools — Future Leaders School, Twedaase Primary School, Community 7 Number 1 and Republic Road School — took part in the Rida Cup Kids Putting Tournament at Celebrity Golf Club in Sakumono.
The Rida Cup has a wider purpose too. Held in support of Futurestars Charity, the event helps support the charity’s work with children across its partner schools, while also creating opportunities for young people to discover and experience golf.
The children were divided into three groups of five, with the top three from each group progressing to the final round. They were watched and supported by the Rida Cup golfers, making the experience even more special.
One young participant summed up the day simply: “I learnt a lot and I had fun playing. I also enjoyed seeing all the people around.”
For parents, seeing their children take part was equally meaningful, with one parent sharing how happy they were to see their child given the opportunity to play golf and experience something new.
The day ended with awards for the top eight players, while every participant received a gift. But the opportunity does not end there.
The participating pupils will receive free training sessions at Celebrity Golf Club, giving them the chance to continue developing their skills and interest in golf.
Through the Rida Cup, the children were not simply spectators. They became part of the event, experiencing a new sport while benefiting from an event that is helping support their education and future.
For Futurestars Charity, this is what sport can do: open doors, create opportunities and change young lives.
