This year’s festival had a new name, as for the first time we offered the boys and girls in our schools the opportunity to showcase their talent in art as well as sports!
Held at the Tema Stadium on Saturday 19th October Futurestars hosted over 500 people for another exciting fun packed day for all. In total 250 children from our five schools Baatsona, Community 8/1, Community 7/1, Republic Road and Twedaase attended as well as children from the Future Leaders school in Accra.
Kick off was 8am for football and netball culminating in a football semi-final between defending champions Twedaase and Future Leaders. Twedaase made it through to the final after a nail-biting penalty shootout to meet the boys from Community 8 primary School.
After the semi-finals the children were served breakfast and the opening ceremony started with a welcome speech from Simon Milton, charity director as well as messages from two of the corporate donors – OMA Group and Fendercare Marine.
The festival’s maiden art show started with a poem from the Republic Road School, telling all present about the impact of the charity in the lives of all the children in the 5 schools. After the poem was a brilliantly choreographed dance from Batsonaa School followed by another poem from the Community 8 School. The Community 7 Primary School ended the art show with a Ga War Dance to make way for the adult tournament.
The adult tournament for staff of our corporate donors started with a lot of excitement on the touchlines with brass band music in the background from the Evergreen Band. This year, the charity was happy to announce the arrival of a new entrant, the Starbites Restaurant. The Starbites Restaurant came on board for this year’s festival and provided fantastic refreshments for over 500 people.
In all, both the children and adults had a great at the festival this year. Batsonaa Primary School took home the first Art show trophy and were crowned champions in the netball competition. Twedaase took the football trophy and the Ghana Education Service team beat the Akwaaba Volunteers team in the adult final.
The day ended with a thank you message from the charity director much dancing and every child was given a book to take home with them.
