From January 2021, Futurestars charity and Akwaaba Volunteers will combine operations and merge into one entity in Ghana under the Futurestars umbrella, retaining the well-established Akwaaba Volunteers brand as part of the Futurestars charity.
Futurestars charity has worked with Accra-based Akwaaba Volunteers informally for the last three years. During this time, it became clear that we share values and goals and we have been impressed with the wonderful work Akwaaba do. When the pandemic hit, Akwaaba’s entire income source (volunteers) was shut down, we put together a fundraising package to keep the charity afloat during 2020.
We are so looking forward to working together. Akwaaba Volunteers will continue to run the volunteer projects under the new Volunteer division of Futurestars which, restrictions allowing, we plan to expand and welcome groups and individuals to Ghana as soon as we are safely able to. Together we will deliver joint projects and work together to the benefit of the children and families in our communities in Ghana, in total reaching some 5000 children.
Current Volunteer projects are offered in Teaching, Sports Coaching, Medicine and Veterinary. Volunteers stay in the spacious shared ‘Akwaaba House’ where they live with founders Jordan and King and a small team, including an excellent cook who provides three meals a day for the volunteers. Teaching opportunities will be carried out at our six partner schools, including the Future Leaders School in Labadi where Futurestars are helping fund teaching staff and school meals from January 2021.
