FUTURESTARS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

“ We want to give more children the chance to attend school and get a better education improving their life opportunities and ability to secure employment in the future.”

Simon Milton, Futurestars Director

Futurestars runs a Scholarship Programme at the Future Leaders School in Accra, funded mostly though the generosity of individual donors. Education in Ghana is free of charge, however, the costs of the basic equipment needed for a child to attend school – registration fees, uniform, shoes, books, and stationery – are not free, meaning that education is out of reach for many families living in acute poverty.

There are thousands of children in Ghana who attend independent schools like the Future Leaders School in Accra, and most of them have some support from various charitable organisations and NGOs from all over the world. These schools are not governed by the local authorities, and they receive no government funding for the education of the children and the running costs of the school.

The Futurestars Scholarship Programme aims to firstly ensure that the school is sustainable for the long term, meaning the children can continue their education, and secondly to directly support the children in most need who may otherwise not be able to attend school.

We achieve our first aim by funding some of the running costs of the school, such as a contribution towards teacher salaries, uniforms, transport, and up to 100,000 school meals a year.

For the most disadvantaged children we give further support through the scholarship programme to provide them with transport to and from school, food, schoolbooks and uniforms – any one of these costs can mean a child is unable to attend school at all.
