Futurestars Charity was honoured to welcome the UK-based Trust Alliance Group (TAG) for an inspiring and impactful visit to Ghana for a week in March. Over the course of their stay, the volunteers immersed themselves in everything engaging in a series of activities that combined education, sports, culture, and community service, leaving a lasting impact on the students of the Future Leaders School.
The volunteers arrived in Ghana and were welcomed by the Futurestars and African Adventures teams. The first day was an introduction to Ghanaian culture, including shopping at Osu Mall, a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, and a trip to select traditional outfits for the upcoming Ghana Day Celebration.
Over the following days, the TAG volunteers dedicated their time to teaching and sports coaching at the Future Leaders School, bringing energy, knowledge, and mentorship to the students. The children engaged in interactive lessons, sports training, and skills development sessions. A key highlight was the oral health education session, where students learned about proper teeth cleaning techniques. Volunteers led a toothbrushing demonstration, ensuring students understood the importance of good dental hygiene. At the end of the session, each child received a toothbrush and toothpaste to encourage consistent oral care.
The group also took a trip to Cape Coast, starting with a visit to Hans Cottage, where they encountered Ghana’s famous crocodile pond and then explored the historic Cape Coast Castle, gaining insight into Ghana’s deep history. The day ended with an adventurous walk at Kakum National Park, where they took on the famous canopy walkway, offering breathtaking views of the rainforest.
During the TAG visit it was Ghana Day Celebration at the school. The volunteers, dressed in traditional African clothing and joined the students in a vibrant celebration of Ghanaian culture. They also got the chance to taste a variety of Ghanaian delicacies prepared for the event. During the celebration, shoes donated by the TAG Volunteer Group, made by Ghanaian based World Shoe were officially announced and the first batch was distributed to the Basic One students.
Beyond education and sports, the volunteers played a major role in the school refurbishment project at Future Leaders School. In just one week they:
– Cleared out and deep-cleaned the block storey classrooms, removing all desks from both downstairs and upstairs classrooms to properly scrub the floors and doors.
– Painted the floors and corridors, significantly reducing the dust generated from the concrete surfaces.
– Painted the walls of the staircases and hallways to brighten up the learning environment, as well as painting the steps to the Container office.
– Painted the steps leading to the new container office, improving accessibility and aesthetics.
– THe team had been fundraising in the UK before the trip and purchased new supplies for the school including locks, lockers, cleaning equipment, toys for the crèche and nursery, and new chairs and tables for both students and staff.
On their final day, the TAG team sorted and distributed the remaining shoes across all classrooms, from the crèche through to the senior high level, ensuring that each student received their pair.
They wrapped up their visit with an appreciation dinner before departing for the UK, leaving behind a legacy of hope, support, and friendship.
