On June 10th, Futurestars hosted the second Periods of Change Menstrual Hygiene event at partner school Republic Road in Tema. This is a follow-up to the launch event in 2024 and focuses on menstrual health education, hygiene awareness, and support for schoolgirls.
Over 120 children joined us including 80 girls from Classes 4 to 6. For many of the girls, it was their first time learning about menstruation in such an open, inclusive setting.
Mrs. Cecelia Ankomah, a registered nurse and lead facilitator, led an engaging and practical session, covering the menstrual cycle, personal hygiene, and a step-by-step demonstration on the use of sanitary pads. “Some of the girls had never heard some of this information before and that’s why I do this. Seeing their faces light up as they learned something so essential is wonderful” said Mrs. Ankomah.
The girls received an Oblayo bag thanks to our friends and partners Trashy Bags Africa – hygiene bags filled with pads, pants, soap, and sanitisers. Massive thanks also go to the female staff of our partners from The Honeysuckle Cafe who also shared their experience with the girls and provided refreshments to all students, teachers, and guests, as well as handing out the bags.
The day also included distributing bags, toys, and educational materials to the lower primary classes and the presentation of a brand-new football jersey set to the boys’ football team.
Tracy Randolph, the Girls and Volunteer Programme Coordinator, highlighted the goal of removing stigma and empowering girls to feel proud and educated about their bodies. “When girls understand their bodies, they walk taller. This is about changing mindsets, not just handing out pads. We’re building confidence and dignity,” she shared.
Emmanuel Okyne-Tetteh, Country Manager commented: “The second edition of ‘Periods of Change’ shows we are not just ticking a box, we are building momentum. As we celebrate 10 years of impact this year, we want to deepen our commitment to education, empowerment, and long-term change. A big thank you to our donors and partners for helping us reach more girls with each event,” he said.
Valentina Akua Maison, HR Manager of The Honeysuckle Pub and Restaurant, expressed her pride in partnering with Futurestars for this special CSR initiative. “Partnering on this project aligns perfectly with our values. We believe in giving back to our community, and this was such a meaningful way to do that, empowering girls where it matters most,”
The school’s Assistant Headmistress, Evelyn Komlakuma, voiced deep appreciation for the charity’s continued involvement. “We were excited and honoured to be chosen for this event. The girls and even the teachers learned so much. We hope more events will follow, the school community is truly excited,”
