State Education in Ghana is free of charge, however the costs of the basic equipment needed for a child to attend school – registration fees, uniform, shoes, books and stationery – are not free, meaning that education is out of reach for many families living in acute poverty.
The Future Leaders school opened 20 years ago and currently has 300 children enrolled for 2021. It offers education and opportunities to some of the poorest children allowing them to obtain an education and not continue the cycle of poverty in their families. Generous ongoing donations from Future Leaders UK, a group of private donors and school trustees who currently fund the school along with fundraising initiatives from Akwaaba Volunteers and others have kept the school free for the children until now. The success of the school and increase in pupil numbers meant the funding no longer covered the costs.
In 2020 The Futurestars trustees agreed to bring the school under the wing of the Futurestars charity to plug the funding gap and work with the current stakeholders to ensure that the school has a stable future. 
The Futurestars contribution will:
- Provide up to 120,000 school meals per year
- Contribute to the teachers’ salaries
- Contribute to children’s school uniforms
- Directly fund some of the children most in need
As we do with our partner schools in Tema Futurestars coaches will provide assistance with Sports and PE coaching and Futurestars will provide the sports kit and equipment needed.
The Futurestars charity staff and Trustees will use their expertise and experience to deliver support to the owner, headteacher and teachers to help provide a better education for all the pupils. Working with the current stakeholders we will investigate registering the school with the Ghana Education Service which will assist sustainability for teacher salaries and regulated examinations. We will continue and expand the Akwaaba volunteer programme bringing volunteers from all over the world to work at the school with the children.
