January saw us welcome two new volunteers to Ghana – Olivia and Jane – who both worked at the Future Leaders School in Accra during their time with us. An early start meant they were both ready and in school by 8am each day as that’s when the school day starts for our children!
After a couple of days settling in the volunteers assisted the teachers in Basic 1 and Kindergarten 2 and after just a week were running their own English and Maths lessons as well as spending a great time of time with children who needed extra support.
During snack and lunch breaks, the volunteers spent time with the children in the playground, learning some Ghanaian games as well as teaching the children some simple fun games they knew.
Weekends were spent with the Futurestars team, they came on our recent team-building exercise on the high ropes at the Botanical Garden and visited the arts and craft market in the middle of Accra where they experienced Ghanaian culture and collected some great souvenirs of local art to take home.
Jane has now returned to the UK after what she described as a ‘life-changing’ experience and Olivia is currently working elsewhere in Ghana and will come back and join us to launch one of our latest girl initiatives.
