“A positive environment is one in which students feel a sense of belonging, trust others,
and feel encouraged to tackle challenges, take risks, and ask questions”
(Bucholz & Sheffler, 2009)
The teachers at the five schools are desperate to improve the environment the children are learning and working in. Some schools don’t have basic toilet facilities, most have restricted if any access to electricity, the buildings are run down, in need of repairs and paint. With help from founding partner Yinson Production WA, we have started a programme of refurbishment, but we urgently need funds as the work needed is substantial and beyond the contribution of one funder
OMA Ghana staff have been involved as part of their CSR programme to tackle painting jobs around the schools, and Yinson have organised urgent repairs and decoration to roofs, buildings, as can be seen from the before and after photos here.
This is phase one of the refurbishment and the roll out plans for 2018 include making every school a safe and secure environment to learn, improve the level of hygiene for children and staff with newly refurbished toilets, brighten up the classrooms and dining areas with newly plastered walls, solid floors and new paintwork. Long term plans include Kitchens and IT centres for each school.
